Summer of Truth

July 21, 2024
8:30am

Prelude  "Grant Peace, We Pray" Felix Mendelssohn, arr. Alex Guebert

Alex Guebert, piano

Grant peace, we pray, in mercy, Lord;
Peace in our time, O send us.
For there is none on earth but You,
None other to defend us.
You only, Lord, can fight for us.
Amen.

Welcome  Pastor Tim Klinkenberg

Ringing of the Bell

Opening Sentences
(Psalm 25:1-3a, 4-5)
Liturgist: In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.
People: I trust in you;
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
Liturgist: No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame
People: Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.
Liturgist: Guide me in your truth and teach me,
People: for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.

Opening Hymn “Christ the Eternal Lord” (LSB 829)

verses 1, 2, 3 and 4

Christ the eternal Lord,
Whose promise here we claim,
Whose gifts of grace are freely poured
On all who name Your name;
With thankfulness and praise
We stand before Your throne,
Intent to serve You all our days
And make Your glory known.

Christ the unchanging Word
To ev’ry passing age,
Whose timeless teachings still are heard
Set forth on Scripture’s page;
Transform our thought and mind,
Enlighten all who read,
Within Your Word by faith to find
The bread of life indeed.

Christ the redeeming Son,
Who shares our human birth,
And by His death salvation won
For ev’ry child of earth;
Inspire our hearts, we pray,
To tell Your love abroad,
That all may honor Christ today
And follow Him as Lord.

Christ the unfading Light
Of everlasting day,
Our Morning Star in splendor bright,
The Life, the Truth, the Way;
That light of truth You give
To servants as to friends,
Your way to walk, Your life to live,
Till earth’s brief journey ends.

Invocation
Liturgist:   In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19b)
People:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution (Psalm 25:6-7, John 14:6, 1 Peter 1:3-4)

Liturgist: "Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.
People: Do not remember the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you, Lord, are good."
Liturgist: Let us confess our sins to God our Father, trusting in His mercy and grace through Jesus Christ- the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
People: Heavenly Father, though we are Your chosen people, we have often acted in accordance with the world rather than Your Word. At times, we have proclaimed words of unkindness and mistrust rather than Your truth. Guide us in Your truth and teach us, for You are our Savior and our hope is in You alone. Forgive us, renew us, and restore as Your chosen people, on account of Jesus. Amen.
silence for confession
Liturgist: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade." As a fellow servant of Christ, I announce the forgiveness of all our sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.

Hymn of Praise “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” (LSB 803)

verses 1 and 2

Joyful, joyful we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love!
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee,
Praising Thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the gloom of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird, and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

Epistle Reading Hebrews 10:19-25 NIV

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Lector:          This is the Word of the Lord.
People:       Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 14:1-7 NIV

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Lector:          This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:       Thanks be to God.

Hymn of the Day
“God Has Spoken by His Prophets”

God has spoken by His prophets,
Spoken His unchanging Word;
Each from age to age proclaiming
God, the one, the righteous Lord.
In the world’s despair and turmoil,
One firm anchor holds us fast:
God is king, His throne eternal;
God the first, and God the last.

God has spoken by Christ Jesus,
Christ, the everlasting Son,
Brightness of the Father’s glory,
With the Father ever one;
Spoken by the Word Incarnate,
God of God, before time was;
Light of Light, to earth descending,
He reveals our God to us.

God is speaking by His Spirit,
Speaking to our hearts again,
In the ageless Word declaring
His own message, now as then.
Through the rise and fall of nations
One sure faith yet standing fast;
God abides, His Word unchanging;
God the first, and God the last.

Message Pastor Tim Klinkenberg

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Gathering of Our Tithes and Offerings

Communion Prayer

Pastor:  Holy Lord, mighty God, from the beginning of creation You have manifested Your grace and mercy. We give You thanks that You made all things from nothing and breathed into us the breath of life. Most of all, we give You thanks and praise that, though we deserved none of Your kindness, You sent forth Your own Son, born of the Virgin by the Holy Spirit, to rescue Your lost creation and restore us to You by His blood. Now gathered before You, we ask You to bring to completion all His saving work and deliver us at last into Your eternal presence. Until that day, keep us, we pray, by the voice of Your Word and the Holy Supper instituted by our Savior.
People:  Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Pastor:      Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:
People:   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

Words of Institution

Pax Domini

Pastor:    The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: Amen.

Agnus Dei  (LSB 198)

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen.

Hymns During Communion

“You Are the Way, through You Alone” (LSB 526)

You are the way; through You alone
Can we the Father find;
In You, O Christ, has God revealed
His heart and will and mind.

You are the truth; Your Word alone
True wisdom can impart;
You only can inform the mind
And purify the heart.

You are the life; the empty tomb
Proclaims Your conqu’ring arm,
And those who put their trust in You
Not death nor hell shall harm.

You are the way, the truth, the life;
Grant us that way to know,
That truth to keep, that life to win
Whose joys eternal flow.

“I Know That My Redeemer Lives” (LSB 461)

verses 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8

I know that my Redeemer lives;
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my ever-living head.

He lives triumphant from the grave;
He lives eternally to save;
He lives all-glorious in the sky;
He lives exalted there on high.

He lives to bless me with His love;
He lives to plead for me above;
He lives my hungry soul to feed;
He lives to help in time of need.

He lives to silence all my fears;
He lives to wipe away my tears;
He lives to calm my troubled heart;
He lives all blessings to impart.

He lives, my kind, wise, heav’nly friend;
He lives and loves me to the end;
He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing;
He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

He lives, all glory to His name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same;
Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives:
I know that my Redeemer lives!

Dismissal

Benediction

Pastor:  The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24–26)
People:   Amen.

Closing Hymn Medley
“Christ the Eternal Lord” (LSB 829)

verse 5

Christ the ascended King
Exalted high above,
Whose praise unending ages sing,
Whom yet unseen we love;
When mortal life is past
Your voice from heaven’s throne
Shall call Your children home at last
To know as we are known.

“Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” (LSB 803)

verse 3

Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Fountainhead of love divine:
Joyful, we Thy heav’n inherit!
Joyful, we by grace are Thine!

Prayers of the Church
July 14, 2024

Lord Jesus Christ, You prayed to our heavenly Father
that we would be set apart for holy service to God in truth
and know where to find truth – in the Word of God.

By Your Spirit, help us to recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
Lead us to affirm every spirit that testifies that You, Lord Jesus,
came down from heaven for us and for our salvation,
and that You are the One greater than the one who is in the world.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Merciful God, You call us by name and promise to each of us Your constant love.

We thank You for the Baptism today of Emily Ann Cislo, daughter of Holly and Mark,
for the Baptism of Stephanie Erica Van Blarcom, wife of Troy Van Blarcom,
and for the Baptism of Josephine Jean Van Blarcom,
daughter of Stephanie and Troy, granddaughter of Ron and Stephanie.

Watch over Emily, Stephanie, and Josephine.
As they grow in faith, deepen their understanding of the Gospel,
and strengthen their steps to follow Jesus - the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Everlasting God, we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, His power, and the wonders He has done.

Thank You for 102 years of life for Phyllis Talmage, mother of Randy.
May she continue to praise You forever, all the days of her life,
and from generation to generation, we will proclaim Your praise.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Most gracious God, Your love through Your Son, Jesus,
always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Richly bless today’s marriage of Lillian Hall, daughter of Ryan and Jennifer,
granddaughter of Bill and Linda Heide, and Jeffrey Runyan.

Assist them and all spouses in holy matrimony with Your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love, they may ever honor and keep their promises, grow in love toward You and for each other, and come at last to the eternal joys You have promised.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Almighty God, we pray for those in need of Your healing help in mind, body and soul, especially…

Jen Bradtke, Rob Charette, Jorn Henderson, Lauren Hollatz, Steve Kipp, Kelly McDonald, Boyd Plowman, Joyce Proteau, Rita Scarabino, those on our printed prayer lists,
and those we name silently in our hearts now…
Pour out the riches of Your grace and mercy upon them.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Lord God, You hold the victory over death and the grave.

Comfort those who grieve, especially…

the family and friends of Estevan Sugiyama, son of Darren and Emilia,
the family and friends of Anthony (Tony) Harnack, father of Tony, husband of Liz.
the family and friends of Peter Toghia, father of Tony, husband of Cheryl.

Help the bereaved to look to You in their time of sorrow,
remembering the cloud of faithful witnesses with which we are surrounded.
Grant that we may one day share in the joys of those who now rest in Your presence.
Lord, in Your mercy,

Loving God, we offer these prayers,
waiting for the day when all Your children will live in Your peace
and praise Your name.

Give us sturdy patience and enduring hope, rooted only in Jesus,
in whose name we pray.
Amen.
